Chemistry Seminar with Dr. Thomas Spudich from Southwest Illinois University of Edwardsville at 4:00pm
Abstract: The presentation will highlight my career path and the varied teaching, research, and service goals at PUIs, as well as my transitions between institutions over the years. I will focus on different teaching styles and the approaches I currently use in my courses. One of the graduate students in the chemistry program will share at least three things they learned from me during their time at Maryville. I will also provide a summary of research projects completed with undergraduates—both published and unpublished—and describe my current work in forensic sciences at SIUE. In addition, I will highlight the development of a micropipette for DNA and RNA determinations and the launch of my company, Spectrum Perception, LLC. I will discuss my emphasis on safety and how it aligns with the varied approaches to safety in academia. Finally, I will share insights and expectations for starting a tenure-track position at a PUI in chemistry over the next 5–10 years.
